Free DVD explains how to tell if a dog is overweight

overweight-dog-dvd.jpgFormula K, Britain's first weight-loss dog food has released a free DVD showing how to tell if a dog is overweight.

The DVD also gives advice on what to do when a dog needs to lose weight.

In the DVD, vet Sarah Hill examines four dogs, including Formula K founder Kit Sadgrove's Labrador retriever, Clifford. After checking, she pronounces many of them overweight.

The DVD is online at www.FormulaK.co.uk/DVD.htm

The vital signs

Want to know whether a dog is overweight? Here's what to do:

  1. Looking from on top, see if there's a narrowing at the dog's waist. No narrowing means he could be overweight.
  2. From the side, look for a tuck behind the last rib. No tuck could mean he's overweight.
  3. Feel for the dog's ribs. You should be able to feel them, but not see them. If you can't easily feel them, he may be overweight.
  4. Feel for the ridges of the spine. If you can't feel them, he's probably overweight.

The DVD is free on-line and a copy is also available for only £5 including p&p from Formula K, 1 Overbrook Business Centre, Blackford, Wedmore BS28 4PA.

Wholesome Nutrition, manufacturers of Formula K, believes the DVD will give the pet trade more confidence to examine dogs.

Vet Sarah Hill said, "We're all used to seeing overweight dogs. So it's easy to regard an overweight dog as normal, when in fact they need to lose weight".

Formula K Founder added, "You can't tell if a dog is overweight by weighing him, because there are big and small boned dogs within each breed. To tell, you have to physically examine the dog as we do in the DVD. Then you can use scales to establish his current weight and judge future progress".
