| First Book on Axolotls |
Interpet Publishing has launched its first book about the axolotl called Keeping Axolotls, by Linda Adkins. An important launch as more and more people are keeping this little known and understood amphibian in the US and increasingly so in the UK too. The book gives readers an overview of a unique creature that stays in a larval stage for its whole life rather like an overgrown tadpole that forgets to become a frog. Keeping Axolotls is about a creature that lives in water, has lizard-like legs and feathery gills which surround the head. Axolotls are even able to re-grow body parts. People are often attracted to the weirdest of pets and the axolotl is definitely that!
In the introduction section of Keeping Axolotls readers learn how
the axolotl is the larval stage of the Salamander growing larger than a
normal larval Salamander. Unlike the larval Salamander, the axolotls
become sexually mature, live for 12 to 20 years and grow to 10-12
inches. Although the axolotl does possess rudimentary lungs, it
breathes primarily though its gills. Originating from two high altitude
freshwater lakes in the basin of Mexico, the axolotl is on the CITES
endangered species list and rarely found in the wild any more.
Virtually all captive axolotls have descended from six specimens, which
were taken from the wild and kept by Zoologist Auguste Dumeril in 1863.
Keeping
Axolotls explains how interesting the axolotl is to keep as a pet, the
personalities they develop, their sociability and how they play and
frolic particularly at night. For people who want a pet that is
extremely unusual and helps explain the story of evolution, the axolotl
fits the bill. Although sometimes called the Mexican Walking Fish, the
axolotl is in fact an amphibian.
The
Keeping Axolotls book is hardback 210mm x 148mm, with 120 colour
photographs and 64 pages. Expert author Linda Adkins has been
fascinated by pond life since childhood. Linda is currently a senior
member of staff at Hertfordshire Fisheries, specialising in ponds,
wildlife and of course axolotls.
Keeping
Axolotls has a suggested retail price of £7.99. Following the
introduction, chapters cover ‘Keeping Axolotls’, ‘Water Quality’,
‘Gender & Breeding’, ‘Transportation & Handling’, ‘Behaviour’,
‘Some Questions Answered’ and finally ‘Health & Common Problems’.
The pictures are fascinating showing the three main colours of the
axolotl, black, albino and gold, as well as fry development.
Totally
